Why SIM registration matters
Ghana links every active SIM to a verified identity (Ghana Card via NIA). Unregistered or improperly registered SIMs can be blocked from calls, SMS, and Mobile Money. Registration protects you from SIM swap fraud and keeps your MoMo wallet active.
How to register a new SIM
- Buy SIM from official MTN, Telecel, or AirtelTigo shop/agent
- Present valid Ghana Card (NIA)
- Agent captures biometrics and links card to SIM
- Keep receipt — note the registered number
SIM re-registration (existing users)
When NCA/telcos announce re-registration drives:
- MTN: Visit MTN service centre with Ghana Card; or use MTN app/USSD when campaign is live
- Telecel: Service centre or approved agent with Ghana Card
- AirtelTigo: Retail shop with Ghana Card and active SIM
If your SIM is blocked
Visit an official service centre with Ghana Card. MoMo funds remain in the wallet but you cannot transact until registration completes. Do not buy replacement SIMs from unverified street vendors.
