Act within minutes

Wrong MoMo transfers are recoverable only sometimes — speed matters. If the recipient has not withdrawn or spent the money, the network may reverse it. After cash-out, recovery is unlikely.

Step 1 — Call the recipient

Dial the number you sent to by mistake. Politely explain the error and ask them to send it back via MoMo. Many honest recipients refund immediately — especially for wrong-digit mistakes to strangers.

Step 2 — Contact your network

  • MTN: Call 100 or visit MoMo agent with transaction ID
  • Telecel: Customer care via 100 or service centre
  • AirtelTigo: 100 or retail shop with SMS receipt

Provide: date, amount, your number, recipient number, and transaction reference from SMS.

Step 3 — Escalate if needed

If the network cannot reverse and the recipient refuses to refund, document everything and consult legal advice for large amounts. Report fraud (not honest wrong-number cases) to police and the telco.

Prevention tips

  • Confirm name shown on screen before PIN entry
  • Use contact list instead of typing numbers
  • Send GHS 1 test for new recipients
  • Double-check merchant shortcodes on Ewale *714*22# bill payments
