Common MoMo scams in Ghana
- Fake “you won” SMS — asks you to call a number and send money to “claim prize”
- SIM swap fraud — criminal ports your number to access MoMo
- Phishing calls — pretend to be telco/bank staff asking for your PIN
- Wrong-number refund trick — sends money, asks you to “refund” more than received
- Fake merchant codes — look-alike USSD menus
Golden rules
- Never share your MoMo PIN — not even “customer care”
- Never share OTP codes with anyone on phone or WhatsApp
- Telcos never ask you to send money to unlock a prize
- Use official USSD only — Ewale bills:

Protect against SIM swap
- Complete SIM registration with Ghana Card
- Enable MoMo fraud alerts if your network offers them
- If you lose signal unexpectedly, call 100 immediately
- Register for MoMo upgrade limits only at official centres
If you are scammed
Call 100, block wallet, report to nearest police station with SMS evidence, and notify your bank if linked accounts exist. See wrong transfer recovery.
