Why prefixes matter
Before you buy airtime, send data, or transfer MoMo, confirm the recipient network. Sending MTN airtime to a Telecel number fails. Prefixes help — but number portability means a 024 number might now be on Telecel. When in doubt, ask the recipient or use Ewale *714*22# which routes cross-network purchases.

After number portability
A ported number keeps its old prefix but runs on a new network. For airtime gifting, use network-specific codes or Ewale aggregator. Guide: number portability.
